Mission 1 of 5

Disk Usage and Storage Info

Find what consumes space in the practice workspace.

Measure your practice folder and safely observe Ubuntu storage information.

Outcome: Storage commands become tools for understanding, not danger.

Mental model

Understand what is happening

du measures file/folder usage.

df reports filesystem free space.

lsblk and findmnt observe storage layout; they do not format anything.

Guided lab

Work through the mission

1

Measure sandbox

Safe

Shows size of the practice folder and its contents.

Terminal
cd ~/linux-practice
du -sh
du -sh * 2>/dev/null
2

Filesystem free space

Read-only

Shows root filesystem free space and type.

Terminal
df -h /
df -hT /
3

Observe block devices

Read-only

Reads storage and mount information only.

Terminal
lsblk
findmnt | head -20
mount | head -20

Checkpoint

Verify the mission

du identifies the largest practice item and df reports capacity.

Try it yourself

One step without a recipe

Find the largest top-level item in ~/linux-practice with du -sh *.

Need a hint?

When your disk feels full, start with `du -sh *` in the suspect directory. It shows you which folders are eating space. Then drill into the biggest one. Repeat until you find the culprit.

Explain it back

Before you move on

  • Which command summarizes folder size?
  • Which command shows filesystem free space?
